UNCLE SAM’S AEC

‘Associated Equipment Company’ (AEC) of Walthamstow received a letter from Mr R B Carr of East Providence, Rhode Island, United States.

The letter began: “Gentlemen, for some months I have been trying to obtain a good picture of a certain truck that was manufactured by your concern during the last war and furnished to some of the supply trains of the US Army, but to date I have not been successful in obtaining one, so I am now writing to you to see if you can help me. The type of truck that I want the picture of is the one that you called ‘Type YB’ and was fitted with the standard English War Department body. I had the great pleasure of driving one of these trucks during my 19-month sojourn in France and, believe me, I never saw anything better on the road than the old AECs, as we used to call them. The number of the truck that I used to drive was 8370, and the motor number was 20204. You see, I have all this data, for one of the last things I did before leaving was to take the bronze plate off the dashboard of the truck and put it in my pack to bring home as a souvenir and, as I stated above, this is all to remember the old trucks by.”
