The ninth Iran International Airshow ran from November 26-29 on the small island of Kish. In the shadow of renewed international pressure on the country, Daniele Faccioli witnessed an incredible display of air power.

Iranian Minister of Defence, Brig Gen Amir Hatami, opened the ninth Iran International Airshow at Kish on November 26. First held 18 years ago, the biennual event is designed to encourage interaction between Iran and its allies as well as demonstrating the progress made by national industry.

This year was particularly important for Iran’s industrial autonomy in light of deteriorating international relations and the restoration of US secondary sanctions. Tensions with Iran are a regular source of regional economic instability. The complex geopolitical situation in the Middle East, where Iran is a central entity, was deeply affected by its controversial nuclear programme.

Following the Iranian nuclear agreement (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, JCPOA), signed in 2015 with the US, Russia, China, France, UK and Germany, that came into effect in January 2016, US secondary sanctions were relaxed.
