Norman Salmon discusses the process of modelling two Tamiya 1/25 scale Tigers

In the early 1970s, Tamiya released a range of 1/25 scale tanks available as static models or with twin-motor remote controls. Some have since been re-boxed by the companies Academy and Toystar. Tamiya has re-released some of these themselves, although unfortunately they have not generally been available in the UK. These kits are now a bit of a rarity, but can still be found for sale on the internet or from traders at model shows, albeit at a premium price.

I returned to the model-making hobby when I took early retirement following 32 years of teaching GSCE Graphics and A-level Product Design. It was about eight months before it dawned on me that I missed doing anything even slightly creative or arty. Making wooden garden furniture in my garage workshop was good, but I craved the fine detailing and creative side of the graphics work. On a whim, I bought a 1/72 scale Airfix Cromwell starter kit from a budget supermarket. That was it, I was hooked back into the hobby I had drifted away from.
